"We're born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we're not alone." – Orson Welles

Mia and Ace rushed away from the workhouse as far as possible. Looking back, they could see the building burst into flames. The growing fire attracted more attention from passersby so it allowed them a better chance not to be noticed. Once they were a whiles away, the two siblings found refuge in an abandoned alley.

"Phew!" Mia rubbed her sweaty forehead. "It looks like we'll be safe for now."

Her little brother was sniffling and hugging her arm desperately. "They were going to take Mother and Father away from us, Mia. Just like the fire took them away. They...Those guys were scary."

Patting his head gently, Mia began to soothe him. "I know. They were scary but don't worry. We won't have to see them ever again. Not ever, I promise."

Later that evening, Capricorn and his thugs were inside a tavern, drinking to celebrate their victorious raid. They guzzled down several bottles of alcohol and laughed wildly, lightening up the rest of the place. As the men drank, they also talked about the workhouse they had raided not too long ago.

Cockerell couldn't get his mind off of the mysterious girl Mia. It angered him that he allowed a mere girl to take him down so easily. Though, he had to admit, she intrigued him. "That girl... It pissed me off knowing that she kicked me. But she was kinda pretty."

He could hear Basta and Flatnose laughing at him. "Please, Cockerell. That wench is out of your league," answered Flatnose. "You should give up before you have any ideas."

"I agree," Basta chimed in. "Once I find those brats, I'll kill 'em for causing us trouble."

A few days passed since the fire at the workhouse. Mia and Ace had safely hid themselves from Capricorn and his men. They continued to travel down the London streets in search of a better home and food for the night. Unfortunately, no one would take them in for very long. No one was willing to take in a couple of "street urchins."

To hide themselves, Mia found some cloaks in the nearby garbage dump and used them to hide her and her brother's identities. It did help them get through the city, despite getting suspicious looks from the civilians.

However, their masquerade didn't last too long.

Capricorn's men were walking through the impoverished ghettos of London. Basta, Flatnose, and Cockerell were laughing to each other, excited to find some prostitutes to "service their needs." They stopped in front of a brothel and the three thugs were making their way inside. But for some reason, Cockerell stopped in front of the doorway. He noticed something strange.

"Hey, Cockerell. What's wrong with you?" questioned Basta.

The redhead pointed towards two cloaked figures walking through the town. "Those two over there. They look pretty damn suspicious in those odd cloaks. Don't they notice people're staring at 'em?"

Mia had seen Cockerell and the others from a distance but kept her head down to hide her face. The wind blew strongly and the hood of her cloak quickly fell off. It didn't take before Cockerell recognized her. "Oh no..."

"Hey! It's those brats from the workhouse!"

Immediately, Basta and Flatnose joined Cockerell in the chase. The Ravencroft siblings were running through the streets and sidewalks in a desperate attempt to flee but they didn't get too far. Ace slipped and fell down while running and was caught by Basta before he had a chance to get up again.

Mia stood, worried, until she herself was caught by Cockerell. He chuckled and licked his lips lustfully. "Found you, girly. You belong to us now. No use trying to escape now."

The two siblings were taken back to Capricorn's hideout and thrown before him once they arrived. Capricorn smirked, impressed by his followers' skills. "I didn't think you would be interested in capturing them, Cockerell. I had actually thought you had killed them along with the rest of those people. What changed your mind?"

Cockerell lifted his head slightly. "The boy, sir. I thought he would be a good recruit for our group since he's young and looked like he would be a fast learner. As for the girl-" He looked over at the frightened Mia and snickered, "-I think she'd be a good maid for me if you don't mind."

His words amused Capricorn and he waved his hand. "Fine. Do what you wish with the two. I put them in your hands, Cockerell."

Again, Cockerell bowed before his boss. "Thank you, sir." He grabbed Mia and Ace by the ropes around their hands, throwing them into separate cells.

Mia grunted from hitting her head against the wall. She glared at the redhead as he locked the door. "You won't get away with this, you bloody monster! I won't let you make me your prisoner!"

She heard Cockerell laugh, "Hey, at least you're not working the streets like one of those whores you saw. You should be grateful for us bringing you here and making you a servant. I'll take good care of your brother so you don't need to worry."

The woman growled under her breath, hearing him snicker agin. "Tell me, Cockerell," she said in an arrogant tone. "How's that 'tender spot' I kicked? I hope it's not hurting you too much. I did kick you pretty hard so you should barely be able to stand now." She let out a wince when Cockerell grabbed her by the chin forcefully, his pale blue eyes glaring murderously.

"Don't push my luck, you wench," he growled. "Get cocky 'round me and I'll kill you and your damned brother without mercy."

He dropped Mia back down on her butt and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Mia's fears had returned to her; she had no idea how to get out such a situation. She heard her brother crying in the cell next to her and smiled kindly.

"Ace?"

"S-Sis? Will we ever get out of here?"

Her smile then disappeared. "I...don't know, Ace."

Then she heard the boy sniffle a few times. "I...I wanna go home. I wanna see Mother and Father again."

"I know, Ace. I do, too." She looked towards the barred window in her cell, feeling the tears come to her eyes as she remembered her parents.

Mother, Father... If you were here, what would you do in times like this? I could use your guidance right now.
